Music Makes You Smarter!

Over the past few years, new scientific evidence has surfaced that shows a dynamic link between the study of music and the development of intelligence. There is even evidence that simply listening to certain kinds of music can boost test scores in students. This listening correlation, sometimes refereed to as the Mozart Effect, was the most talked about research item discovered by neuroscientist Dr. Gordon Shaw, psychologist Dr. Frances Rauscher and their research team from the University of California at Irvine. But the really significant findings were the discovery of an unmistakable causal link between music and spatial intelligence. Spatial intelligence is the ability to perceive the visual world accurately, to form mental images of physical objects, and to recognise variations of objects . This research has considerable potential to reverse the view of music and music education as more or less irrelevant to intellectual development.

Another important recent development has been the attention paid to Howard Gardner and his Theory of Multiple Intelligences. This theory, in short, is a pluralized way of understanding the way we think and learn. Recent studies in cognitive science, psychology and neuroscience suggest that every person's level of intelligence is actually made up of autonomous faculties that can work individually or together. Howard Gardner has identified seven such faculties:

Musical Intelligence * Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence * Logical-Mathematical Intelligence * Linguistic Intelligence * Spatial Intelligence * Interpersonal Intelligence * Intrapersonal Intelligence
